About Washington Academy

Washington Academy is a place where students are known, supported, and encouraged to discover what they do well. Since 1792, we have brought together the warmth and personal connections of a small Maine community with the energy and perspectives of students from around the world. Our students have many ways to find their path. They can challenge themselves through college-preparatory academics, explore careers through hands-on technical programs, express themselves through the arts, compete in athletics, and develop confidence through leadership and service. Our coastal Maine setting also gives students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom and experience a truly distinctive part of the world. We are a community that values curiosity, hard work, kindness, integrity, and respect. We believe young people grow when caring adults recognize their individual strengths, set high expectations, and help them work through challenges. At Washington Academy, students are prepared not only for college or a career, but also to become capable, compassionate, and resilient people who are ready to make a difference.

What Makes Us Unique

At Washington Academy students are known, supported, and valued. Teachers, coaches, and dorm staff take the time to understand each student—including those who learn differently. With personal attention and individualized academic support, students build confidence, recognize their strengths, and discover how they learn best. Students experience the best of coastal Maine while preparing for their future. Marine biology, outdoor leadership, coastal ecology, competitive athletics, and the arts give students meaningful ways to explore their interests beyond the classroom. In a safe and welcoming boarding community, students from around the world develop lasting friendships, independence, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Weekend Life

Weekend life at Washington Academy offers students a good balance of organized activities, time with friends, and opportunities to explore Downeast Maine. Students can participate in Raider athletics or cheer on their classmates at games and competitions. They may also enjoy theater and music performances, school dances, community-service projects, open gym, outdoor recreation, and other special events. Weekend activities may include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, downhill and cross-country skiing, shopping, movies, bowling, paintball, laser tag, trampoline parks, rock climbing, and trips to Bangor, Portland, Freeport, Boston, and local festivals. Our location also provides opportunities to visit beaches, trails, state parks, waterways, and coastal communities throughout the region. Some weekends are busy and adventurous, while others provide time to relax, study, cook together, play games, or simply spend time with friends. Activities change with the seasons, student interests, and local events, helping students build friendships, experience Maine, and feel connected to the Washington Academy community outside the classroom.
