La Lumiere School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day prep school located in La Porte, Indiana. Founded in 1963, La Lumiere serves students in grades 9-12 who come from as close as five minutes’ drive and as far as the other side of the globe. Our day and boarding programs both offer rigorous academics and myriad opportunities for growth in confidence, self-awareness, compassion, and ownership of personal experience. Each day brings with it a sense of wonder—our campus is situated on two lakes and vast woodlands, which makes it an exceptional place to live and learn.
What Makes Us Unique
Leadership development is central to the La Lumiere experience. Through hands-on programs and service opportunities, students build the character, responsibility, and confidence to lead with integrity — skills that carry into college and beyond. Our Prefect Program places students in real leadership roles across the school community. Selected for character, commitment, and the ability to inspire, prefects represent their peers, build school spirit, and serve as the link between students and administration. Prefects receive practical leadership training in communication, teamwork, and public speaking, then put it to work: modeling positive behavior, fostering inclusivity, and holding themselves and others accountable. It’s leadership learned by doing.
Students are sorted into Head's Cup teams at the beginning of their time at La Lumiere. Throughout the school year, these teams will compete in competitions, with the winner taking home the Head's Cup at the end of the school year. This helps to foster community and build relationships within the student body.
