Extracurriculars

Our extra-curricular programme is cultivated to offer choice and challenge to all students. Girls can choose from over 140 clubs and activities including Model United Nations, Greenpower, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, lacrosse, and cricket. Students are also encouraged and supported in setting up their own clubs. For example, our feminine literature club was launched by a girl eager to share her passion for Jane Austen with fellow students. Students also participate in academic enrichment, a programme designed to develop key skills in research, critical thinking, and debating. We hold student-led talks at lunchtime and, most recently, hosted TEDx St Swithun's, where students presented a topic to a panel of judges, building their confidence in public speaking. Ten students then spoke at our live event, which took place in our on-site performing arts centre and was streamed in affiliation with TED.

Facilities

Overlooking the Hampshire Downs, our grounds are spacious and encompass sports fields, tennis courts and gardens, which boarding students can explore and enjoy in their free time. In addition to classrooms and science laboratories, we have an impressive library and student workspace, and an ICT suite. Students particularly enjoy our ‘Harry Potter room’, which brings English lessons to life. We also have a magnificent performing arts centre with a 600-seat auditorium, a music school, an art and technology block, a sports hall and a full-size indoor swimming pool. New to the 2026/27 academic year, we are opening an outstanding sporting facility, including indoor netball and tennis courts. With six boarding houses, our boarding system is designed to foster independent, mature and capable students who are well-prepared for life outside of school. Students who join us in Year 7 (aged 11) start in shared dormitories to support their transition into the school as they develop independence and form lasting friendships. Boarding students then progress to single rooms for the rest of their Senior School experience. Great care is taken to ensure an even distribution of age groups and nationalities across each house and there are strong relationships both between year groups and between the four different senior houses. As girls enter the final year of sixth form (Year 13), the boarding and days girls are united in Finlay House. Students can work in house during their study periods, go to town for lunch and after school, work in the library and study centre in the evenings, and have free access to our fitness suite, swimming pool and music practice rooms. It is the ideal transition to help them prepare for university life.
