Pomfret School

Pomfret School remains at the forefront of educational innovation. Through the Grauer Family Institute for Excellence and Innovation in Education, faculty receive support to explore emerging teaching practices, engage in professional development, and create dynamic learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Enrolled students consistently identify Pomfret’s innovative approach to teaching and learning, distinctive signature programs, and strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as key reasons for choosing the School. Pomfret’s educational philosophy is reflected in a range of programs designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and real-world engagement. Competency-based learning makes expectations clear, gives students more meaningful feedback on each individual assignment, and ensures they truly master essential skills before moving on. These internal outcome scores are converted to letter grades at the end of the marking period, and those letter grades are what appear on the transcript. QUEST, a cornerstone of student life, challenges students to explore purpose, character, and personal growth. The Certificate Program provides focused, in-depth study in areas of individual interest, similar to a college major. Through Global Studies, students can earn academic credit while studying around the world. Experiential learning extends beyond the classroom through Project: Pomfret where students explore projects that strive to answer essential questions, have real-world application, and align with at least one UN Sustainable Development Goals, The Helios Project, our student-built solar aquaponics greenhouse that supports research and provides fresh produce to local food pantries and Pomfret’s Community Service Program connects with local partners to address real needs.
