There is something special about Miss Porter’s School. Nestled in the heart of the historic village of Farmington, Connecticut, our campus is a place where tradition and innovation meet. Perhaps it is our rich history, dating back to 1843, when visionary educator Sarah Porter founded a school dedicated to the intellectual and personal growth of young women. Perhaps it is the beauty and charm of our campus along the Farmington River. Most of all, it is the people, a community that is at once ambitious and supportive, thoughtful and joyful.
For more than 180 years, Miss Porter’s School has empowered young women to lead lives of consequence. The results can be seen in generations of alumnae who have made meaningful contributions in their professions, communities, and across the globe.
Miss Porter’s School is an independent college preparatory boarding and day school for girls in grades 9–12. Our students come from 23 states and 28 countries, bringing a wide range of perspectives, experiences, and aspirations to campus. Fifteen percent of our students are international, and 33 percent identify as students of color, contributing to a vibrant and globally minded learning environment.
At Porter’s, we educate young women to become informed, courageous, resourceful, and ethical leaders who will shape a changing world. Through a dynamic and rigorous academic program, meaningful mentorship, and opportunities for leadership both inside and outside the classroom, students are challenged to think critically, act with purpose, and engage confidently with the world around them.
What Makes Us Unique
Two distinctive features of the Miss Porter’s School experience are our commitment to foundational learning and global engagement. All new students begin their Porter’s journey with courses such as Intro to Inquiry and Technology, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which build essential skills in critical thinking, research, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Additionally, every student participates in our Global Education program, which provides international travel opportunities that deepen cultural understanding and encourage students to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
Learning at Porter’s is deeply experiential; it begins with our true trimester block schedule. Students have opportunities to pursue internships, engage in hands-on learning experiences, and complete a Capstone project that allows them to conduct independent research or create a meaningful culminating project based on their interests and passions. These experiences help students connect classroom learning with real-world application while developing skills in leadership, collaboration, and innovation.
Complementing these academic opportunities, Porter’s seminars focus on wellness, leadership, belonging, diversity, equity and inclusion, and social-emotional learning. Through these programs, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their communities, and the wider world. Together, these experiences foster the confidence, curiosity, and resilience that prepare young women to lead lives of purpose and impact in an increasingly interconnected global society.
